says Spain’s Cepesca

SPANISH fisheries confederation Cepesca’s general secretary Javier Garat tells delegates to “catch less – sell better” at the 13th Technical Seminar on the Fishing Sector held in Celeiro, northwest Spain. The Spanish fishing industry is suffering a cost and price squeeze.

DEMONSTRATING responsible fishing is essential to the development of the fresh fish business, according to Hanstholm fish merchant Carsten Beith of Fon Fish. He tells FNI: “The fishing sector has to take the initiative, such as the camera system being developed in Denmark to monitor catches.”

Russian pollock catches
set to increase

Petr Savchuk, president of Russian Far East fishing and processing giant BAMR-ROLIZ, tells FNI how industry-driven conservation measures are dramatically improving the Russian pollock stock. Catches this year are being allowed to increase by 30% to around 1.5 million tonnes.

Carry out grading in the trawl!

A PROTOTYPE system to grade fish in a trawl while fishing is being built by Icelandic company Star-Oddi. An infra-red camera will scan each fish and the data used to open gates either to release the fish from the net or send them into the codend.

Krill trawl passes trial in Southern Ocean

A MURMANSK Trawl Fleet ship has been towing a new krill trawl from German company Rofia on tests in the Southern Ocean. The Dana 400 krill trawl was supplied by Rofia complete with bridles, codend and spares.

Light trials to herd

A NEW trawl design by the Icelandic Marine Research Institute replaces front-section netting, wire and floats with lights to herd fish. If the project is successful, trawls of this type will provide significant fuel savings.

Close co-operation in
Spencer Gulf fishery

FORTY years of co-operative working between skippers in the South Australian prawn fishery through the Spencer Gulf & West Coast Prawn Fishermen’s Association Inc. are paying massive dividends. The fleet has cut back from 300 days’ fishing a year to just 50 – and still lands a similar sized catch.

Record fines in biggest
NZ ‘trucking case’

TWO Korean stern trawlers have been forfeited to the New Zealand government and fined a record NZ$360,000 (US$209,000). Skippers and employees pleaded guilty to falsifying data entries to “truck” fish catches between catching zones. They were convicted under the Fisheries Act 1996 and the Fisheries (Reporting) Regulations 2001.
