Losing
the Plot!
The Sinn Féin Spokesperson on Fisheries Martin Ferris TD has accused
the EU Commission of losing the plot on the management of
fisheries. He was responding to a decision to establish a quota for recreational
anglers and to deduct that quota from the existing commercial quota. For
many sea anglers it could be the end of the line. The move is designed
to protect endangered species such as cod, ling, pollack and shark. The
EU sets tight quotas on commercial fishermen for these species
but anglers have no such restrictions. The EU believes the recreational
sector is getting so big that anglers can have a significant impact on
the populations of endangered species so accordingly it must be
controlled.

Vital Irish
Fishing Interests Defended But Problems Still Exist for NW Coast
Very difficult EU Fisheries Ministers talks on fishing opportunities
for 2009 concluded recently in Brussels. The Federation of Irish
Fishermen (FIF) is pleased that its extensive input over recent
weeks and months has had a major bearing on the positive outcome.

SEASCAPES: Ireland Needs a Marine Department
The decision not to close the coastal maritime radio stations on
Valentia Island and at Malin Head was the correct one and has been
welcomed by the staffs and communities in Kerry and Donegal, as
well as by the general marine community. The Minister for Transport
and Marine, Noel Dempsey, has been complimented for listening to
the case made by both areas, which was supported by County Councils,
other local authorities and by many public representatives, councillors
and T.Ds.

Fifty
Footers West Coast Roundup Pat Nolans History of the Fifty Footers
Continues .....
It was at the sumptuous surroundings of Ballinahinch Castle Hotel,
located in the heart of the Ballinahinch Estate, Co. Galway that I
met up with a latter day fisherman, the congenial Noel King of Roundstone.
My initial reaction was there must be some mistake; this fellow does
not look like a fisherman. What I hadnt taken into account is
that Noel has long abandoned the trappings of seafaring and replaced
them with the high-class chauffeur business, Kings Chauffeur Service.
Once we began to converse it soon became evident that the gentleman
I had just met knew a lot more about fishing than first met the eye.
He had indeed fished out of Roundstone and other Galway ports for
the best part of 30 years!
