Faroe Islands versus Austria in Tórshavn, 11 October 2008
2010 FIFA World Cup qualification - UEFA Group 7
The Faroes once again upset Austrian football fans - this time by playing Austria to a 1 - 1 draw. Faroes scored a shock 1-0 win over Austria in a European Championship qualifier in 1990 in a match that is still a source of joy in the islands. This time Bogi Løkin, a 19-year-old player, who the Austrian media describe as a young unemployed amateur, was the hero of the day after scoring at the beginning of the second half. The Austrian media also noted that most of the Faroese team are amateurs (listing their day jobs) that train a few times a week. The Austrians didn't sound pleased with the result against their well-paid professionals. It was novel to see Faroese and Austrian players from the 1990 match in attendance greeting each other (and seeing that both groups had lost hair in the last 18 years).
Manchester City FC versus EB Streymur 17 July 2008
The match resulted in a 0 - 2 win for Manchester City FC and a memorable occasion for all, not least all the Faroese football fans who had a chance of seeing such a famous English team playing in the Faroes. The event took place in the Tórsvøll stadium in Tórshavn, which has a capacity of six thousand and is one of the two national stadiums in Faroes. EB Streymur's own ground in the village of Eiði has a capacity of one thousand - perhaps a bit small for such a match ...
Whatever the score, the small village team won just by getting to take on a well-known professional team whose players cost millions. Manchester City's home stadium has a capacity of 48,500 - the population of the whole of Faroes is 48,433 (as per Jan. 2008).
Many thanks to the Manchester team and it's fans for coming!
Manchester City fans get a free lift to Faroes 17 July 2008
12 football fans stranded in Shetland while trying to get to Manchester City's match in Tórshavn today (Thursday 17 July) were picked up by the Faroese Airline, Atlantic Airways, and taken to Faroes. They had driven up to Aberdeen then travelled by ferry to Shetland where they had hoped to get on a 72-foot trawler they had rented to take them to Faroes. They were prevented from sailing though by high seas. The UK tabloid newspaper The Sun and the airline then teamed up to get them to the match and Manchester City sponsors Thomas Cook surprised them further by having hotel accommodation arranged for their stay.
Bryan Adams in the Faroe Islands 4 June 2008
Musician singer-songwriter, Bryan Adams performed in Tórshavn in the football stadium on the 4 June 2008 to an enthusiastic audience of 6000 - 12.5% of the population of the Faroe Islands! He then stayed a couple of days to look round and to do a bit of recording.
Al Gore in the Faroe Islands April 2008
Nobel Prize Winner and Former Vice President of United States Al Gore, gave a talk at the Transatlantic Climate Conference in Tórshavn on the 7 April 2008. Faroes is relatively unknown in the world but the world is not unknown in the Faroes. Among the events in the past months was a visit in October 2007, by former president of the United States, Bill Clinton and the chairman of the Weapons of Mass Destruction Commission, Hans Blix who came to the Faroes and gave speeches about globalization.
